The Bihar Board of Open Schooling and Examination is a government-registered society established under the Societies Act. The board, however, was set up similarly to India's National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), which is under the department of the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

The official representatives of the Bihar Board of Open Schooling and Examination run an admissions process with the goal of allowing qualified applicants into HSC and SSC classes at public and private universities and schools in the state of Bihar.

Bihar Board of Open Schooling and Examination was established in 2011 by the Education Department, Govt. of Bihar to provide flexibility to students opting for self study or Homeschooling.

It also provides an opportunity to those who left their studies due to unwanted reasons as they can now pass matric and intermediate through this platform. Also there are some special children who don’t find schools suitable for them and they just wish to upgrade their skills or study by themselves.

Like NIOS, BBOSE also offers courses from basic to secondary and senior secondary level at very low fees . An application fee of INR 50 is charged for all courses however registration  fees charged are different for different categories and different courses as depicted in the table below in INR.
